Members of St. Thomas Becket have sponsored five families from Ukraine since early 2023. They had come to the US under a program called United for Ukraine, which allowed them to leave their war-torn country and settle here. They have all successfully faced the challenges of coming to a new country and have each contributed to their communities. They are now at risk of losing their legal standing due to potential changes in their refugee status.
Spirit of Justice hosted a presentation on Sunday, June 9th on the immigration status issues for our Ukrainian friends. Ifrah Esse, an advocate from the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, shared the background on the parolee program called United For Ukraine as well as the current changes that impact their current legal status. Some will lose their legal status as early as October 2026 if no changes are made. As a follow-up, postcards were available to send to Senators Klobuchar and Smith and Representative Craig asking for support for the Protecting Our Guests During Hostilities in Ukraine Act. (Senate file 696/House Resolution 2118). This will provide legal status for Ukrainians for as long as the war continues. If you were not able to attend, we ask that you reach out via mail, email or phone call to the offices of our federal legislators to ask for their active support of this and other related bills.
